A	Not Demonstrated	No identifiable safety and security measures There are no or almost negligible signs of safety and security maintenance process. The school premises are exposed to safety risks, lack of awareness about safety issues, no monitoring of physical and psychosocial aspects of safety.
B	Developing	Safety measures are evident, but process not structured There are attempts to maintain safety and security, e.g. safety guidelines, restricted access to risk prone areas, first aid, fire safety system, etc., but safety measures not given due importance to - e.g. first aid items are not replenished, no maintenance of fire safety system, safety guidelines only on paper- not into practice, etc. Need to have clear definition, delegation and proper monitoring of safety and security related roles and responsibilities.
C	Proficient	Structured safety and security maintenance process with standardized procedures and clearly defined, delegated and monitored responsibilities There is clear evidence of a safety and security maintenance process; there is a functional safety and security committee/some responsible person/s to deal with safety and security related matters, the safety guidelines are clearly communicated and the alignment of all stakeholders is strictly monitored. No evidence of the use of advanced technology, and a system to evaluate the effectiveness of safety and security measures for continuous improvement.
D	Accomplished	Technology supported, effective safety and security maintenance process, periodic collaborative reviews for continuous improvement There are technology-supported systems for safety and security maintenance (access cards, CCTVs, etc.) There is a system to ensure the effectiveness of safety and security maintenance process through periodic internal and external evaluation, followed by revisions. Need for more emphasis on psycho-social safety and improved disaster preparedness, and efforts to showcase the best practices.
E	Distinguished	Highly sophisticated, and exemplary/demonstrable safety and security maintenance process, measures to ensure psycho-social safety, high level of disaster preparedness  The school has developed a unique, highly sophisticated system to implement, check, monitor and ensure the effectiveness ofsafety and security measures to ensure a safe physical and psycho-social atmosphere. Use of advanced technology, a system for recording, reporting, and ensuring responses to the safety and security concerns of all stakeholders, and high level of disaster preparedness (emergency readiness plan, evacuation plans, emergency transport, updated emergency contacts details, insurance against natural/man-made calamities with group Insurance of school staff and students, conduct of disaster response drills, etc.). Successful efforts to showcase the unique safety and security maintenance system to other schools.
